Rules for Club Competitions - 2010

COMPETITORS ARE EXPECTED TO SHOW COURTESY TO OTHER PARTICIPANTS BY ENSURING THAT TIES ARE PLAYED WITHIN THE DATES SPECIFIED AND THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES ARE INTENDED TO ASSIST MEMBERS

1) ARRANGING OF TIES

The previous practice of designating a "challenger" party and a "challenged" party to a tie has been discontinued to help the smooth running of ties. Both parties to any tie will be held equally responsible for playing and completing that tie by the appropriate appointed date. Either party can bring any difficulty in arranging a tie to the attention of the Competitions Sub Committee who will make a decision according to the individual circumstances, always bearing in mind that the arranging of the tie was the equal responsibility of both parties. If it were to be found that both parties had done nothing to progress the tie, then the ultimate decision would be to remove both from the Competition thus allowing the next round to be arranged and played. If, on the other hand, one party has made approaches without success, he should advise the Sub Committee before the "play-off" deadline is reached. After appropriate enquiries, the Sub Committee will make a decision as to where the blame lies and disqualify the guilty party. The Sub Committee's decision will be final.

2) SKIPS

It is the responsibility of the Skip to ensure that each member of his team knows when a tie is to be played and is present on the green at the starting time. The Skip should inform a Member of the Competitions Committee of any problem as early as possible.

3) MARKERS

In the singles ties, the score card is kept by the marker who must be a member of the Club. The second named player is responsible for arranging a marker. If no marker has been arranged, the first named player may claim the tie. Each competitor in a singles competition must be prepared to mark one tie.

4) SCORE CARDS

In all ties, other than Singles, two score cards must be kept and these must be signed by the Skips.

5) PLAY

Trial ends may be played and burnt ends will be replayed. If, on completion of the required number of ends in any tie, both teams have equal scores (counting handicaps as appropriate), Law 45 applies. Extra ends are not handicapped.

6) SUBSTITUTES

If a player, entered for a team competition, finds he cannot play on the arranged date, he must inform his Skip at the earliest possible moment. His Skip may ask the Competitions Committee to agree another date for the tie to be played, or approve a Substitute (See also para 2 above). Any approval given will be under the following conditions:-

  1. In the case of the Fours and Triples, if the teams agree to play the tie before the next fixed date, the Competitions Committee will most likely agree to the new date. However, if the teams cannot agree a date, a substitute may be arranged subject to the following:
  2. The substitute must have a handicap which does not vary significantly from that of the Member he replaces.
  3. In the Fours and Triples, he must be a Member who did not enter the Competition.
  4. In the Triples, if the player being replaced is the Skip, the substitute must not play as the Skip and the order of the play will be decided by the original second. In this competition, only one substitute is permitted. Should a second member of the original team become unavailable, the team will be withdrawn from the competition.
  5. In the Fours, if the player being replaced is the Skip, the substitute must not play as Skip and the order of play will be decided by the original third. In this competition, only two substitutes are permitted. Should a third member of the original team become unavailable, the team will be withdrawn from the Competition.
  6. In the Scott-Dodd and Stirling Pairs, no substitute is allowed after the first round has been played.
  7. In all competitions, substitutes once committed, must play for the remainder of the tournament.

PLEASE NOTE: In fairness to others, it is to be expected that members will NOT enter a competition which has fixed dates unless under normal circumstances, they expect to meet their commitment.

7) CONTRAVENTIONS

In the event of a tie not being played by the date stated or by the end of any extensions granted, or being played by one or more persons other than those originally drawn or approved by the Competitions Committee as substitutes, or of any apparent contraventions of the Rules of the Competition, the Competitions Committee, after consulting both Skips involved and considering the facts, will rule on such breach and decide if elimination of one, or both teams is warranted.

8) FINALS

Whites/Greys must be worn in the finals of all competitions.

9) COMPETITIONS COMMITTEE

The names of the Committee Members responsible for each Competition are shown at the head of the draw sheets. Any queries or complaints should be addressed to them.
